The Must-Have Accessory Combo: Turquoise & Gold

This summer’s styles are full of hot colors!  And whether it’s a neon pair of shorts, bright-colored skinnies, or a hot printed bikini, nothing is complete without some bling.  The biggest trend that the summer season is showcasing is turquoise and gold accessories.  This combination gives that perfect last touch to any outfit, whether you’re dressing up or dressing down.  I actually just wore a thick gold bracelet and a turquoise multi-strand beaded necklace to work today with a black dress and red flats!

Turquoise and gold jewelry is wildly popular, and even works for accessories other than jewelry!  This pair of flat sandals is adorable with turquoise and gold accents, great for a casual sunny day.   Another terrific addition to any plain outfit is a turquoise and gold necklace, like this one shown here with a long strand and pendant.  A noteworthy site for a wide selection of jewelry is fantasyjewelrybox.com.  If you simply type the word turquoise in their search box, you will see that there are 120 results that provide you with an incredible selection of beautiful turquoise jewelry!  Also, in case you haven’t noticed, the Michael Kors summer catalog is FULL of these colors.  From rings, to necklaces, to their extensive selection of turquoise and gold bracelets, and even their watches!  This color combo is everywhere, and continues to look great.

Many celebrities embrace the turquoise and gold trend as well.  Here’s a picture of Sofia Vergara in a trendy ensemble, pairing some plain black and white pieces together, and then flaring up her style with a leopard bag, turquoise earrings, and a gold necklace/bracelet.  I personally love this look- she’s not doing too much, but has the right accents to make her whole outfit look super chic!

The turquoise and gold style can be paired with neutrals, brights, and even neons.  This accessory combo can create a sweet summer accent for a plainer look, or it can be the finishing piece of flare paired with bold printed patterns.  These accessories can be pulled off no matter what your style is.  Get ‘em while they’re hot and brighten up your style!

Bandeau’s: A Summer Must Have

$

Maybe one of the best things to come out of the fashion world is bandeau’s. Sure, they may not look like much, after all, it is a very tiny piece of clothing, however, its usefulness and effectiveness beat any doubts; it has a very specific purpose and fulfills it exceptionally. I discovered them this past spring, and can’t imagine not owning one now.

Bandeau’s look similar to a tube top or bikini top in that they have no straps and fit perfectly over your top chest area; however, it doesn’t go any higher or lower than that. It also essentially looks like a strapless bra because it almost acts like a bra by covering that necessary area. They come in all different colors, and some of them have various prints and patterns too; there are even a few that come in a different fabric. They really are a saving grace, and help turn an outfit that could have potentially been trashy into one that is cute and stylish. It’s usually best to wear them with a strapless bra, however you can wear them with regular bras too, whatever you’re most comfortable with. On the other hand, it’s important to remember that bandeau’s ARE NOT bra’s, they don’t have padding or support, so it’s usually better to wear a bra underneath them.

When I first came across bandeau’s, I was a little skeptical on how I would look and whether I would be able to pull it off. As I learned though, anyone can wear bandeau’s and any style or design and look great as long as they wear it with confidence and personality and don’t let the clothes wear them. I’m all for trying new things and taking fashion risks, yet with certain things and clothes, such as bandeau’s, there really is only one right way you should and can wear them. You also should only wear them with particular shirts as well. Loose, open sided shirts are the types of shirts you usually see girls wear bandeau’s with. These are also great to wear under low cut, see through, or knitted tops. You simply wear a bandeau underneath the shirt so that you see the bandeau instead of your bra or worse if you chose not to wear one. It looks casual and comfortable, and you look good instead of letting it all hang out. It is also a great way to beat the heat! Instead of having to hear another shirt underneath a shirt, you wear a bandeau instead, which is lighter and cooler for those hot, humid summer days; after all, usually wearing as little clothes/material as possible without being completely naked is what people aim for for during the summer.

Overall, bandeau’s just make the whole outfit, and especially the top, look better and more put together. You still look sexy, and it leaves a lot to be desired; it shows off your body without showing too much unnecessary skin. They’re extremely affordable, and you can get them almost anywhere, especially since they are so huge right now for the summer. This trend is hot, so get yourself one!

3 Essentials When Choosing a Bathing Suit

$
0
0

As the saying goes, its summertime and the living is easy. Summer is also the time when people go on vacation, and the one essential item you need when you go on vacation is a bathing suit, and a good one; sometimes, people even bring more than one with them (I am one of those individuals).

There are so many different types of bathing suits today, it’s hard to choose! There are various patterns, designs, cuts, and styles, and some even have extra padding in the tops for those of us who have a smaller chest. String bikinis are usually the most popular, but they have since evolved. Choosing a bikini may seem simple, but there are three essential elements you should look for when purchasing one:

1) Make sure your chest actually fits in your bathing suit top. I have seen one too many girls wearing bikini tops that are way too small for them; their chest is practically falling out. It doesn’t look tasteful, sexy, or stylish at all, it just looks distasteful and trashy. I know it’s harder for girls with a larger chest to find tops that fit them good and support them, but there are such tops out there that exist. Whether it’s a halter, bandeau, or triangle top, or the designs are stripes, floral or animal print, a solid color, etc find the right size and cut that suits your chest size. You will be more comfortable and you will look better rather than letting it all hang out, trust me.

2) Keep your cheeks in. Ladies, keep a little to the imagination, no one wants to see your entire butt out of your bathing suit bottom; otherwise, you might as well be wearing a thong in public. I know bottoms are small, and obviously they’re designed so that some of your butt may show, but that doesn’t mean you should take advantage of it or purchase a bottom that is a size or two too small. It doesn’t look classy one bit, and makes me cringe. Save that for the bedroom, you want to keep the cheeks in check. I know many bathing suit bottoms are low rise so it may be difficult keeping it all it, but it is very much possible, so just do it! You don’t want it to look like you’re trying too hard to purposely show off your bikini body, it’s not cute. You essentially want to come off confident and that your look is effortless. There is such a thing as showing off the right amount of skin without going overboard, it’s very easy: just buy the right size.

3) Finally, pick a bathing suit that compliments your body type. Certain designs and styles look better on people with particular body types. For example, having a smaller chest and being on the thinner side, I usually look for a bathing suit with a bandeau or triangle top that is either a push up or has extra padding. When choosing a bottom, I usually opt for a side tie one or a hipster short so I have moderate coverage; I ultimately want a design that gives me curves. However, I think if you have the confidence, you can rock anything! You want to wear the bathing suit, not let it wear you. Don’t be afraid to flaunt your curves or show off your body! Even if you aren’t one hundred percent comfortable being in a bikini, there are cute one pieces you can choose from, as well as tankinis. There are also boy short and skirt bottoms too if you are more conservative; the possibilities really are endless. No matter your body type, you are beautiful and perfect the way you are, just remember that.

Overall, just have fun with it! Don’t stress yourself out or get all worked up for nothing, shopping is supposed to be fun. You will look good no matter what as long as you are confident and follow my three essentials. You don’t want to give people the wrong impression; they are very quick to judge, especially based on what you’re wearing. Whether you need a bathing suit to go to the beach, go on vacation, or just swim in your pool, choose one that suits and flatters you.

The D-Cup Chronicles

$

Like I have said in previous blog entries, I have been cursed (or blessed, depending on who you ask) with a large chest. I am a 36 D and I suppose it could be worse, but here’s the catch: I’m 5’1 and 115 pounds. I am a large-chested girl with a small frame, which hinders some of my fashion options. While some people are excited about summer staples like swimsuits, tube tops, and sweet summer dresses, I’m trying to figure out how to participate in these trends without overexposing my assets. While I can comfortably wear most summer clothing, there are certain things I will never be able to pull off unless I want to risk a humiliating wardrobe malfunction.

Summer is the season of every type of swim top you can imagine, endless prints and colors for sundresses and tanks, and sexy cut-out tops and dresses. When I go swimsuit shopping, I can’t buy certain styles, like bandeau or string bikini and forget about going to inexpensive retailers like Forever 21 or Target for a swim top.

If I want to find something that fits, I have to shell out some cash for an underwire style. A big trend I love this summer is the crop bustier top; however all the ones I’ve tried on are too small on top, but too big around my small ribcage. Most of these tops, along with many dresses at places like Urban Outfitters, have an open back or cut-outs on the side or back, which makes it impossible to wear a bra. Not wearing a bra is not an option for me because it would be extremely obvious, so I would have to find a special type of bra and it’s just a ton of work with little payoff. I also can’t wear sundresses with triangle tops (like the one shown below) because I would spill out, even if I got a larger size.

Even though this is not a long list, it is frustrating finding clothes that are both flattering and modest enough for public. I don’t mean to complain about being small and I’m sure some girls with smaller chests are rolling their eyes at my so-called “problem”, but it is an issue I and other large-chested females go through every day.

Let me not forget to remind all of you busty ladies about all of the great things we can wear.  If we’re feeling sexy, halter style tops making for a great way to show off our best assets.  For the more conservatives, scoop necks and less severe V-necks work well, too.  It’s always best to go for something fitted instead of loose because we all know what happens when there’s fabric hanging straight off a large chest… No one wants to answer “When are you due” unless you’re actually pregnant!

When channeling a celeb to get fashion inspiration from look to Jennifer Love Hewitt, Katy Perry and the like.

Be proud of your full figure and cover it appropriately!

What Not to Wear: Wedding Edition

$
0
0

It’s summertime, and not only does that mean hot weather, no school, shorts, skirts, and bikini’s, and vacations, but countless weddings as well. I will be attending my cousin’s wedding this weekend and it made me wonder what the other guests were going to wear. I’ve been to weddings before, and trust me, I could tell you some horror stories. Since I will be in attendance at a wedding, I thought I’d write about what you should absolutely never wear to a wedding. Here are my top three offenders:

1) Short, barely there, suffocating mini dresses. I’m all for wanting to look good and show off your figure. However, as with everything, there is a time and place. Weddings are not somewhere you can or should show off half naked or looking like you’re about to go to a strip club or rave. I’m not saying you can’t wear short dresses, I’m just saying don’t wear one where your boobs are busting out or your butt is hanging out; a simple way to test this is to bend over and see if the dress is the right length so that nothing shows or hangs out. You don’t want to show up and make the wrong impression or have people talking about or looking at you for the wrong reasons; there is nothing cute or flattering about that. Don’t shove your body into something that is too tight or is inappropriate for a wedding. When picking something out, just think if you would appreciate or want someone showing up to your wedding wearing that. Overall, just be respectful and tasteful when choosing an outfit. After all, you want to be able to have fun and dance without worrying about flashing anyone. In going with this, I also wanted to point out to never, ever wear hooker heels to a wedding; moderate, slightly higher heels work just fine and you will look and be more comfortable.

2) Loud, obnoxious prints. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with wearing a cute dress or skirt with a simple, nice pattern, such as animal or floral print. However, when I see someone walk into a wedding head to toe in it, I can’t stand it. To me, that look is more suitable if you were going to a bar or club; it screams look at me. If the whole outfit is covered in a print, and the print is smaller or tamer, such as smaller, spaced out polka dots, or tiny flowers on the top half of the dress, than go for it! There is nothing wrong with prints on an outfit, I’m just saying to save the over the top, loud, prints for a night out on the town. To me, weddings are elegant and classy, so you should dress accordingly and chose a style that is dressier and more chic and stylish. To wear a print to a wedding, or really anywhere, it has be balanced out and done correctly. Therefore, if you choose to wear a print to a wedding, just make sure you choose wisely, don’t go overboard, and keep it tasteful.

3) White. I know many people will disagree with me on this one, but I also know that there will be many others who will agree. In my opinion, white is just for the bride on that day. You don’t want to take away from her special day, and have all eyes on you instead or people compare you to the bride and who may look better. I don’t know why you would want to wear white to a wedding in the first place when there are so many other different great color choices! However, if the bride decides not to wear a white dress, than I guess it’s ok if you choose to wear one; however I would still try to mix it up. Especially if it’s a fall or winter wedding, a different color would absolutely work and look better than white.

I’ll be anxious to see if anyone wears these three items at my cousin’s wedding this weekend. However, as the saying goes, it really is to each his own, and people are going to wear what they want to wear. I just feel that the three above pieces would work better outside a wedding and be more appropriate. Choose something flirty and feminine to wear to a wedding instead, and you’ll have a great time.

NYC vs. LA: Fashion Sound Off

$

While fashions vary greatly across America, the most apparent differences in fashion trends are seen within New York City and Los Angeles. Whether you prefer the toughness of NYC fashion gurus, or the hobo-chic apparel often worn by LA natives, you cannot deny that each city has nailed their own look.

NYC: Tough Exterior

ny3 ny2 ny1

Studs, leather, fur, stilettos, blazers, dark colors and layers are just a few words often used to describe New York City fashion. NYC is argued to be one of the fashion capitols of the world due to fashion week, fast trends and the accessibility to designer brands all within one block. Essentially, NYC is the fashion mecca. Since the city itself is often bombarded with millions of diverse people, the fashion trends usually seen tend to be edgy, bold, eclectic and fashion forward. Truly anything goes in this city, as long as you can pull it off.

ny6 ny5 ny4

Next time you take a trip to the city: take an hour out of your day, grab a chai latte and just people watch. You’ll be amazed by how the fashion represents the exterior of the city. Since the city is so crowded, the people of New York leave it to their fashion to leave a mark. They express their individuality through their clothing in order to remain original and unique while surrounded by millions of other people. The key is to remain anonymous, and let your clothing speak for you. But watch out for those pigeons, they are not your friends. Unless you appreciate bird remains on your brand new shoes, then by all means go play with the pigeons. End rant.

LA: City of Cool

 la4 ny1 ny2

Los Angeles differs from any other fashion capitol because the natural environment of the city largely inspires its fashion trends. LA fashion tends to hold onto its beach-loving roots through: light colors, bright patterns, organic fashions, fedoras, animal print, bikinis as bras, and ironic tattoos. Since Los Angeles is home to many celebrities, fashion trends are often started in this city through the trickle-down theory of fashion influence. For example: the very trendy torn up, high-waisted jean shorts are said to originate from LA and have become a huge trend across America this past summer. These shorts are often torn to shreds and embellished with studs, crosses or American flags. Check out Kylie Jenners Instagram page and you will be sure to see them in every other picture.

Screen shot 2013-01-12 at 6.01.32 PM

Los Angeles is extremely vast in its fashion style. I perceive the fashions of LA to be mainly divided into two categories: beachy and sweet or retro and tough. The beachy and sweet individuals tend to wear the least amount of clothing possible and prefer swimsuits instead of clothing. Think: lax bro minus the frat and plus the beach.  The retro and tough individuals love tight clothing, sequins, tattoos and Kat Von D. However, if going for the latter of these looks, please do NOT wear Ed Hardy. You don’t want to be the individual responsible the retinal burns of every individual residing in LA.

Although both NYC and LA are separated by thousands of miles and have extremely different style aesthetics, both cities do have several common attributes. These include: a love for edgier trends, tattoos, plaid, piercings, leather, jean materials and fedoras. The differences between the cities aren’t necessarily the clothing itself but how the individuals style each outfit to reflect the cities.

Finding the Right Bathing Suit for Your Body

$

Ah, the joys of summer are soon upon us. Frozen yogurt, picnics, sunshine, vacations, and of course… bathing suit shopping. This may not be the most pleasurable of events, and if it is for you, congratulations! Whether you’ve lost weight or are just looking for a new bathing suit for this year, I’ve got you covered by letting you know which bathing suits are right for your body.

1. Large Bust

Those who have larger busts tend to have the most difficulty finding a bathing suit top, but the comfort and coverage of a tankini can help you. They’re not just for tweens. Tankinis are extremely comfortable and you don’t have to worry about pulling a Janet Jackson in the pool or at the beach.

2. Larger Stomach

For those who have a little bit more in their stomach area than others, you don’t always have to stick to one pieces. You can wear tankinis or bikinis that fold over on the top so that your skin won’t be constricted.

3. Thicker Legs

Bikinis, tankinis, and monokinis are the way to go here. If you’re choosing a bikini, try going with a side tie bottom. They fit looser and will give you comfort! Monokinis are really in for this season, and are a one-piece bathing suit crossed between a tankini and a full one-piece.

Pistol Panties has launched a high street collection for Topshop.

b1

The capsule swimwear collection hit stores on April 21.

The line is made up of four different styles inspired by the Copacabana girls of the Forties.  It features glamorous bikinis and daring one-pieces with cut-out detailing and bold prints.

b2

The range is being offered internationally, which gives the British label a wider reach then before.

The label’s designer, Deborah Fleming, was given complete creative freedom by Topshop for the collection, which allowed her to experiment with ideas.

b3

“I went a little more over-the-top with the designs and the fabric embellishments than I usually do with my main collection, which has become more fine-tuned over the seasons.  But, essentially, the fits and shapes and the signature are very similar,” she told Vogue UK.

Prices start at $90 for the bikinis.

Sustainable Swimwear

Swimsuits are undeniably some of the most complicated items to purchase, alongside jeans and jogging shoes. Not only you have to make sure it’s the right shape for your body, but when you finally manage to find a good one it’s either not the right size or the colour is tremendous. It’s not uncommon to go shopping thinking you’ll only need ten minutes to close the deal and end up hitting every shop in town in the desperate attempt to find something remotely acceptable. When this happens, we are usually tempted to give in and finally buy the least awful swimsuit we find, thinking that we might as well spend the entire holiday hiding under the umbrella to preserve that milky English-rose complexion for another year.  My best advice is to avoid giving up and instead keep looking with more vigour: there is a swimsuit for you out there, the perfect one. It’s hanging on a mannequin right now, blinking behind a window waiting for you to see it and realize it’s the swimsuit of your dreams.
In case you are still looking, then, we propose you a series of eco-friendly swimsuits in every style and price for an environmentally conscious holiday that you’ll remember forever.

Emobi. Fresh and colourful, Emobi’s swimsuits instantly make you want to take a dive into the sea with their bright hues and simple silhouettes. The Australian brand designs the prints in-house and uses eco-friendly water based dyes to reduce their impact on the environment.

Vitamin A by Amahlia Stevens. As the world has begun experiencing the American dream through movies and TV, we have learnt to associate summer with California. In this sense, there is nothing more fun that buying a swimsuit inspired by sunny beaches such as Santa Monica and Malibu. This design blends together sexy accents and timeless shapes with a touch of sporty modernity that ties in perfectly with the current international vibe. Don’t let this one pass!

Fables by Barrie. For hygiene reasons, it’s always best to buy a new swimsuits rather than a used one. Nevertheless, if you simply can’t let go of your love for vintage style, Fables by Barrie is the best place to check out. High-waisted culottes are paired with 40s inspired bras in bright colours or decorated with polka-dots and bows.

It also gives off a retro vibe, and given the right bathing suit, it has the potential to look cute.

History of the Bikini

The bikini is practically every girl’s summer uniform these days, but it wasn’t always like that. Bikinis didn’t become popular until the 60’s. Before then, women covered up more at the beach

Take this advertisement from the 40’s as an example. None of the swimsuits show the women’s bellies, chests, or thighs. So, when Louis Réard revealed his design for a new swimsuit after being inspired by women who rolled up the edges of their suits to get a better tan, he really rocked the fashion boat.

Réard asked Micheline Bernardini, a nude dancer at the Casino de Paris, to model his design for the camera. She agreed and on July 5th, 1946, the photo shoot took place. Réard decided to name his new swimsuit after the Bikini Atoll test of atomic weapons, which was the first above ground test of atomic technology.

While some people, especially French women, welcomed the design, most found it scandalous. Bikinis were featured at the Miss World beauty pageant in 1951, but, when Kiki Håkansson of Sweden was crowned in a bikini, everyone was so appalled that some religious countries threatened to boycott future Miss World events unless bikinis were banned from all of them, making Kiki Håkansson the only Miss World contestant to ever be crowned in a bikini. After Miss World banned bikinis from their contests, many other pageants followed suit.

Not long after, French model Brigitte Bardot popularized the bikini after she was photographed wearing one at the Cannes Film Festival in 1953. Soon, it became trendy for famous women to have themselves photographed wearing bikinis, since it made them seem more edgy and appealing to men.

As the bikini became more and more popular in the magazines and movies, Pedro Zaragoza, the mayor of Benidorm, Spain, wanted to legalize the bikini in his city in order to draw in tourists. He convinced Spain’s dictator, Francisco Franco, to legalize it in 1959, and, just as Zaragoza had hoped, Benidoem soon became a popular destination. However, it was still illegal to wear a bikini in, Australia, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, and most US states.

People only really started warming up to the bikini after Ursula Andress wore one in the first major James Bond movie, Dr. No. The scene where she steps out of the ocean dressed only in her bikini is often considered one of the most important moments in swimsuit history.

After this, bikinis started appearing in more and more places, especially the popular beach party and surfing movies of the 60’s. Bikinis contributed greatly to the sexual revolution of 1960’s America, during which they were used as a symbol of feminine freedom and power. Pin-up posters featuring  bikini-clad stars, such as Marilyn Monroe, also helped sway the public’s opinion.

Another huge bikini milestone took place in 1964 when Sports Illustrated released its first swimsuit edition and featured a woman wearing a bikini right on the cover.

Finally, in 1988, four years after Louis Réard’s death, his clothing company sadly failed. By this time, though, bikinis were well-established as socially acceptable and made up 20% of all swimsuit sales. Since then, the sales have only skyrocketed as demand for bikinis only increases. It’s now the most popular type of swimwear in the world.
